Fertility is a very common reason people seek out acupuncture treatment and many studies have shown the positive effects of Chinese medicine on fertility. Acupuncture is not only a powerful tool to put the hormonal system in balance, but is also virtually side-effect free, making it a natural modality for fertility enhancement. It is effective for infertility from any cause, including PCOS, endometriosis, and unexplained infertility. Chinese herbal medicine is the most effective tool in this arena, but for women undergoing IVF and IUI acupuncture alone enhances the body’s ability to respond to these procedures. Certainly given the mild yet powerful effect of acupuncture the fertility patient is well advised to take advantage of acupuncture therapy to give herself every possible advantage.
Often neglected in fertility treatments is the role of the male. Even if the male partner is determined to be “normal”, and even if the female partner does have a clear diagnosis, it is strongly advised that both partners receive an evaluation to optimize the outcome. The man may have a “clean bill of health” by western medical standards, but in the Chinese medical view there may be imbalances in the body that are essential to address to enhance fertility. In any event the fifty percent contribution of the father must always be kept in mind. |
