MASSAGE THERAPY

Heal, Relax and Restore at one of our locations in Baltimore, Towson,

or Bel Air

Massage Therapy is an essential part of our integrative approach to healthcare at Integrative Health Centers. Acupuncture can often work miracles for aches and pains, but there are times when soft tissue work is key to complete relief of such conditions. Acupuncture relieves inflammation. Massage relieves spasms.

Massage is viewed by many people as a luxury when in fact it is often a medical necessity. Compared to massage, prescription muscle relaxants are quite ineffective. A chemical ingested to slightly lower overall muscle tone is no match for an experienced massage practitioner who knows exactly how to find specific areas of tension and wring them free of pain. Often with neck and back pain, stress is a huge component. A full body massage is able to relax the enitire body to the point where specific areas of pain start to release even before the massage practitioner finds them. Once overall stress is reduced and tension is eliminated then the body's energy flows freely and surely radiant health will follow. For these reasons we recommend massage in conjunction with acupuncture as part of our pain management program.

THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE AND BODYWORK

Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork is used to target and reduce pain and tension in specific areas of the body and will result in an overall sense of relaxation. Techniques using light to firm touch is used to relax muscles and increase circulation, providing the nutrients necessary for healing. Bodywork can be used in conjunction with conventional medical treatment of illness and injury to enhance the body's natural healing process by reducing recovery time, as well as alleviate pain, stress and revitalize the body. On a regular basis, bodywork enhances health and helps balance the body, mind and spirit.

Symptoms relieved by Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork:

  • headaches
  • neck cramps
  • shoulder tightness
  • pain between shoulder blades
  • shooting pain in the hands
  • numbness in fingers
  • low back stiffness
  • shooting pain in the legs
  • overuse and repetitive strain injuries
  • workplace or athletic trauma
  • digestive problems
  • TMJ
  • high blood pressure
  • anxiety and depression
  • pain control for arthritis and fibromyalgia
TECHNIQUES:
Swedish Massage results in increased blood circulation, mental and physical relaxation, decreased stress and muscle tension, and improved range of motion. It involves flowing strokes using the hands, forearms, and elbows of the therapist to manipulate the superficial layers of the muscles and joints to improve mental and physical health.
Deep Tissue Massage is used to release pain and chronic patterns of muscular tension. The therapist may use fingers, thumbs, and elbows to provide slow strokes and focused pressure at deeper layers of the muscle. This type of manipulation stimulates circulation and promotes detoxification and oxygenation of stagnant tissues. When nutrients are brought to the cells, repair occurs at the cellular level and damaged muscle and connective tissue will heal. As a result, nerve entrapment is corrected, inflammation, edema and pain is relieved, and joint range of motion will increas.
Cupping is used to loosen cellulite, stubborn knots and adhesions in the connective tissue. Various size cupsare used to create suction and negative pressure against the skin. This helps the body to release excess fluids and toxins, stimulate peripheral nervous system and bring blood flow to stagnant muscles and skin.
Hot Stone Massage uses a variety of large and small smooth heated stones to melt away tension and stress, resulting in deep relaxation. Swedish, Deep Tissue, and Acupressure techniques are combined to achieve maximum results.
Pregnancy Massage focuses on the special needs of the healthy mother-to-be as her body goes through the dramatic changes of the childbirth experience. This is done only after the first trimester to enhance the function of muscles and joints, improve circulation and relieves mental and physical fatigue.
Myofascial Release is a gentle technique used with other techniques to stretch and correct the fascia, or the connective tissue that surrounds all of the muscles, bones, and organs of the body resulting in pain relief.
Shiatsu/Acupressure: Touching, pressing, or holding the body along acupoints primarily with the hands, thumbs or fingers to relax the body at a deep level. Treatments are done while the client is fully clothed.
