The most common question I hear regarding acupuncture is, ” Does it hurt? ” Of course most people who have had acupuncture treatment will answer with “very little” or “not much at all”. I have heard people describe the insertion as a pricking sensation and in many instances, painless.  The second most common question is, ” Does insurance cover acupuncture? ” The answer is “yes” for most of the insurance plans in Maryland. Carefirst provides the best acupuncture benefits with almost all of their plans including benefits, unless your employer has chosen to exclude the benefit on purpose. Nearly all federal and state employees with Carefirst plans have excellent benefits with a small($10) or no co-pay. This includes firefighters, police, teachers and government agency employees. All of our acupuncture practitioners are participating providers with the various Carefirst networks and we handle the billing and benefits inquiries for you. We always recommend that you also check your benefits in order to be sure we have the same information.

Other health insurance plans cover acupuncture as well, including JHU, Aetna, United and Cigna. We participate as in network providers with JHU and have found those plans to have excellent coverage as well. Aetna, United and Cigna will often have out of network benfits available as we do not participate with them directly, but we do bill your insurance under those plans as well. We have chosen not to participate with those networks because they have a more limited coverage, but if you have benefits on your plan we will bill them for you as well.
