Everybody Loves Carbs: Part 2

Signs you are not digesting your carbohydrates well may include:
• tender area under chin on either side of tongue connection—rub between jaw line and tongue muscle
• dry conditions in the body (i.e. dry eyes, dry mouth or nose)
• inability to relax
• frequently irritated throat
• muscle weakness
• voice becomes high-pitched under stress
• startles easily

Carbohydrate digestion requires amylase and carbohydrase. Since carbohydrate digestion begins in the mouth, it is imperative that food be chewed fully and completely to stimulate amylase production. Food should be chewed until it becomes liquid and pretty much disappears down the throat almost without making a noticeable effort to swallow. Additionally, even with liquids like soups and juices, we should “chew” a bit to get the amylase going. If it seems that you are not digesting carbohydrates fully, you may want to consider supplementing with digestive enzymes, preferably a broad-spectrum, plant-based enzyme like “Digest” by Enzymedica.
