Acupuncture Therapy as an Integrative Medical Modality

January 5, 2006

Acupuncture is a safe and effective medical modality which can be used as an adjunctive therapy to many western medical therapies. The most current research regarding acupuncture focuses on the efficacy of acupuncture for various diseased conditions. A review of research literature shows acupuncture as a safe and effective modality for chronic and acute pain syndromes.

The primary treatment mechanism is characterized by improved circulation at the local area, stimulation of endogenous opiod production and reduction of local area inflammation. Acupuncture is most effective in an integrative approach with other medical modalities.

The focus of making acupuncture therapy available at St. Joseph's is to expand the integrative care model in a hospital setting. Acupuncture is an excellent adjunct for post-operative rehabilitation and pain management. Acupuncture becomes increasingly useful for patients with sensitivity to traditional pain medicines or who are finding minimal relief with allopathic therapies.

Domenic J. Thomas, L.Ac. is a staff acupuncturist with hospital privileges at St. Joseph's working closely with the OB/GYN unit for pregnancy related pain syndromes. Acupuncture therapy is available in all departments at St. Joseph's as an in-patient and out-patient service. Insurance re-imbursement is available for acupuncture therapy.
