The Fall Season Is A Great Time To Improve Your Health

September 10, 2007 by Domenic Thomas, M.S.O.M., L.Ac.

Many people wait for the new year to start a new diet and exercise regimen. Gym memberships soar and New Year's resolutions are fresh in everyone's mind. The problem for many of us, is we have unnecessarily packed on a few pounds in the previous months.

I believe this has more to do with psychology than anything else, since many of us assume we can't improve our health through the fall and holiday seasons. The weather is conducive for walking, biking, hiking and running, while the grocery stores are stocked with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.

There is generally an improved local air quality which can increase the "refreshed" feeling that comes with exercising outdoors. A consistent diet and exercise regimen can ward off colds and help decrease symptoms associated with Seasonal Affective Disorder during the winter months.

Fall is a great time to soak in some warm sunshine before the weather turns cold and the days get shorter. The holidays provide a plenty of joy, but they can also increase stress levels dramatically. Getting healthy isn't something we should do for a few months during the year, it's a year long commitment.
